THURSDAY, June 14 (HealthDay News) -- Based on current trends and treatment patterns, the estimated number of cancer survivors in the United States is likely to increase to nearly 18 million by Jan. 1, 2022, according to a report published online June 14 in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.
To understand the unique medical and psychosocial needs of cancer survivors, Rebecca Siegel, M.P.H., from the American Cancer Society in Atlanta, and colleagues estimated the prevalence of cancer survivors on Jan. 1, 2012, and Jan. 1, 2022, by cancer site. Median age and stage at diagnosis and survival were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registries; and patterns of cancer treatment were described using the National Cancer Data Base and the SEER-Medicare Databases.
The researchers estimated that 13.7 million Americans with a history of cancer were alive on Jan. 1, 2012, and that this number would increase to nearly 18 million by Jan. 1, 2022. For males, the three most prevalent cancers were found to be prostate, colorectal, and melanoma of the skin, while for females the three most prevalent cancers were breast, uterine corpus, and colorectal cancer.
"This article summarizes common cancer treatments, survival rates, and post-treatment concerns and introduces the new National Cancer Survivorship Resource Center, which has engaged more than 100 volunteer survivorship experts nationwide to develop tools for cancer survivors, caregivers, health care professionals, advocates, and policy makers," the authors write.
