Automated blood-cell analyzers. Can you count on them to count well?

For a non-hematologist like me, what was striking at the very outset while beginning to learn about cell counting, was the remarkable way in which techniques of cell counting (hematology) and particle counting (physics) have complemented and contributed to each other. It is indeed interesting to note that the hemocytometer for cell counting which was first designed by French anatomist and histologist Louis-Charles Malassez (1842 – 1909), was first used to quantitatively measure blood cells and subsequently adapted for particle counting. In the course of time, an invention in the making, for counting particles in paint got accidentally adapted into hematology for cell counting-the Coulter principle [1].
