Question: viral gastroenteritis HELP!

littlemiss_2075 - Sat Dec 23, 2006 12:49 pm

I am severly emetophobic ( fear of Vomiting ) my 'friend' came over yesterday. She had a stomach virus this week and wouldn't say when. She licked my face and kept kissing me thinking it was funny that I freaked out. And said she wanted to prove I wouldn't get sick. You would think she was immature and young, but she is 23 and should know better. Anyways. With viral gastroenteritis, is it contagious through her saliva. I don't think she had vomited the day she did this. It has been 20 hours since this happened and I am waiting for 72 hours to pass and hoep I am in the clear. Could I get sick from her saliva? I have only read, close contact with sick people, but not sure if you have to be around them while they are Vomiting or shortly after. Please help, I am terrified!!

The incubation time varies depending on the virus that is causing the Vomiting. In the winter season there are many types around, but some of the more common ones are rotavirus with an incubation period of 1 to 3 days. Norwalk-like and caliciviruses are also around now and have an incubation period of 12 hours to 4 days on average.

These viruses are spread via a fecal-oral route. As to whether or not your friend was still contagious, this all depends on when she actually got sick. The tend to be contagious starting just before the onset of symptoms until the resolution of the diarrheal phase.

Hopefully you will dodge infection. Best wishes.
