Question: white pus/swollen tonsils

I'm an 18 year old female. I was diagnosed with strep throat about a week ago and was given Antibiotics. The day after I started taking the medicine, I felt 100% better, but my throat has remained a little sore when I swallow. There are also pus pockets on my tonsils, and my tonsils are red and swollen. I just got my Antibiotics switched to something different, and my doctor told me that if these pills don't clear up my throat in a week then I should get tested for Mononucleosis. I thought with mono, you are very tired, sick with Fever, stomach ache. etc? I feel completely normal, except for the sore throat and the white pus on my tonsils. Is it still possible to have mono?

When you were prescribed the Antibiotics did they do a throat culture to see if you indeed did have streptococcal pharyngitis? Strep throat can cause the sore throat and exudate. Typically, the Antibiotics do not shorten the course of the illness, they only prevent the complication of rheumatic heart disease. This may explain why your throat continues to hurt. For strep throat, the best Antibiotic is still penicillin.
If the Antibiotic you were on was amoxicillin and you developed a rash, you almost certainly have mono. This is a well known reaction between the virus and Antibiotic.
If you do not get better soon, it is very reasonable to be checked for mono. Typically, mono does present with fatigue, ill feelings, sore throat, etc. but the absence of these symptoms do not exclude mono. A simple blood test called a monospot should suffice for you.
Hope this helps.
