Question: dog rabies

blitz - Sun Jan 28, 2007 5:29 pm

I was outside and a dog I did not know came up to me and was jumping up and licking me I have some cat scratches on my hand and some saliva may have gotten in them. I also just rinsed off my hands with water after the dog licked me because I was in a hurry to get some where then about an hour later without thinking I rubbed my nose and mouth and was wondering if the virus could still have been on my hands? the dog does not seem aggressive and it did have a collar so im assuming its been to a vet. if a dog goes to a vet does it have to get rabies shots? another thing I was wondering is my cat scratches me like crazy could I get anything from these scraches?

Hi blitz,
Generally speaking, if an animal has rabies their behavior is not typically friendly, licking etc. I would not, at this point, be overly concerned about rabies. Best wishes.
Sincerely,
Theresa Jones, RN
