Enterococci

Streptococcus faecalis

Gram positive streptococci

They are normal inhabitants of the intestine. They may cause urinary tract infections, cholecystitis, prostatitis and 10% of cases of endocarditis.

Cultural characteristics

Nonhaemolytic streptococci: They do not produce hemolysis if cultured in blood agar.

Treatment

They are more resistant to antibiotics than other streptococci. Combined penicillin and aminoglycosides are used for their treatment usually. Vancomycin is used for the treatment of aminoglycoside resistant strains. Some enterococci have been reported to be resistant to multiple drugs.
