Question: Excrutiating Headaches

PleaseHelpTena - Sun Jan 07, 2007 4:36 am

My husband (male, 49 years old) has a severe Headache at his left temple. These come and go but occur everyday, most times twice a day and has been going on for 4 weeks. These Headaches last anywhere from 1 to 3 hours. ER doctor did a CT scan thinking it was sinutitus. Primary physician has ruled out Sinus and Migrane and is sending him to a Nuerologist, can't get in till end of next week. The pain is bad. Musinex D does not relieve the pain. He was prescribed Hydrocodone 5mg/500mg - 1 tablet 6 hours. This does not help. 2 tablets does get him some sleep, but he won't take two (except once). He had graves disease 8 years ago and had surgery to put his eyes back in the sockets, and now has plates and screws in the eye area. The Headaches include a pin pricking sensation followed by a feeling of someone pounding the pins in, a buring sensation accompanies and then just horrific pain. Always at the left side temple.

He takes levoxal - 1 daily.

He has had normal Headaches over the years but nothing like this ever.

Any help to releive the pain or suggestions as to cause is greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Tena

Hello,

I am glad that your husband will be seen by a neurologist. It was a good idea to get a CT/MRI done. This excludes several dangerous pathologies. What he needs is to be examined by a neurologist. Examination may yield more information as to the cause of Headache.

The sensory symptoms he is complaining of could be aura of a classic migraine. Why did his doctor exclude migraine?

Best regards,

The nuerologist also excluded migraines because of the symptoms, my husband never experiences any form of Nausea to accompany the Headaches. The nuerologist believes that my husband has Trigeminal Nuralgia and has prescribed Lurika, once daily for 1 week and then twice daily for a week and we return for our second visit on the 22nd of January. I have read on the web, more about Trigeminal Nuralgia and it does not show any real cure or cause. The nuerologist said that the CT Scan does not show any tumor or anuerism, good news, but called the illness idiopathic. I don't know if he will be on this medicine for life or only when the Headaches occur. My husband had 3 really good days with only twinges of the pain. I really can't call them Headaches but it is real pain.

Thank you for responding, I appreciate your input now and in the future. I will update again after our next visit. Who knows, perhaps this information will help someone else.
