Question: Pain on side of legs

cwpick - Tue Jan 09, 2007 5:10 pm

I am a 37 year old male who is suffering from pain on the side of my legs. It starts below the hips and runs to the middle of the leg. I am an avid weighlifter and thought the pain was from squating. The pain feels like muscle soreness but does not go away and continues to get worse rather than better over time. I have taken a two week break but the pain is still there. Someone has mentioned sciatic nerve damage but the pain is not in the back of the leg it is on the side. I have had knee surgeries in the past to remove cartlidge and have had osteomylitis from a broken arm that required two surgies to remove the infection. I have a history of cancer, Stroke and heart disease in my family. I am on no medication but do take supplements such as protein powder, creatine, fish oil, and a multi vitaimin. Thank you for any help.

As the pain is bilateral, you need to go to the doc and evaluate for spine abnormality which is most important.

Clinical examination/ Xray / MRI should be helpful.

The pain could also be muscular, precipitated due to weight lifting.

Ruling out the cause in spine is important.

After the examination - kindly ask for the advice regarding weight lifting in future.

Kindly keep us updated too.

Wish you all the best.

Thank you for the suggestion. I was planning on seeing someone as this has been going on for a long time.

Just wanted to give an update, I meet with my doctor who thinks it is Iliotibial Band Syndrome. Which from my understanding are the tendons that run down your legs. He suggested an x-ray and meeting with a physical therapist.
