Question: Itchy fingers

I am trying to make some sense of a photsensitivity I have developed that now causes an itchy, raised rash on my fingers, and they then erupt and ooze and sometimes get infected. It happens always within a day or two of being in the sun, even minimally. It has been happening for years now, but this year is the first that the eruptions actually started oozing and getting infected. I read somewhere that this can be an underlying sign of Lupus, but, don't want to go to the doctor acting all paranoid about a rash on my fingers. Anyone have any clue?
Thanks!!!!

Well, thank you, I did see my doctor, and she is ordering blood tests to check for Lupus.

User avatar Hello,
It could also be a form of photosensitivity dermatitis. An inflammation of the skin that results from allergy enhanced by exposure to the sun. This can later become infected. Please let us know how your tests go.

Well, all blood tests came back normal, and after being at a pool party this past weekend, my fingers are breaking out even more with this rash, itching me like crazy, they grow into blisters then, and ooze and are painful, I now have it on my face, (just a little, thank God) and some on my legs, and my whole body just itches and breaks out in a hive here and there. I cant get into to a dermatologist until September 1st. By then, I'll either have scratched every inch of skin off, or, it will be gone and the dr will think I'm a nut case! LOL
Thank you all for your responses!

User avatar Dear Caterinawit,

Some of the medications are known to cause photosensitivity (if this was photosensitivity) and/or skin rashes.

Sarafem is known to cause urticaria, if sarafem was started at or near the time you started to notice this drug rash, i would recommend that you call your doctor to discuss this with him/her.

If this happens around the same time of the year each year, some people have a kind or reaction/allergy to the weather and their skin kinds of peels off and some might have some blisters here and there.

This is a long shot and i know you have been having this for years, but, are you using a new sun block or a body lotion that you might be allergic to and caused things to get worse at the pool party?

Thank you very much for using our website http://doctorslounge.com and i hope that this information helped.

Hi Dr Yasser,
Thank you for all your responses. No, I havent used sun block, in fact, I never do, I did try it last week so that the sun would not make me itch again, and the sun block gave me a rash! As far as the sarafem. Good point, maybe? I started that though back in the winter, I think its too far for that to be the culprit. I did finally get into a dermatologist, and he lanced one of the blisters open, they had gotten very large, and purple, reddish blood filled. On one of the other blisters, he opened that up, took some tissue for a biopsy and stitched me up. SO, I have to wait like another ten days for the results. I asked him what he thought. At the time of the visit, both hands were breaking out in blisters, I had some scattered hives that come and go, and all he said was to wait for the biopsy results. So , thats where we are with that, but, everyday, when I get in the car to drive my hour drive to work, the sun starts shining thru the windows, and I start itching, and breaking out again. Sucks, cause I love the summer, and I love the sun!
THanks again!

User avatar Dear Caterinawit,

i think there is an entity called physical urticaria where patients develop allergy to physical stimuli such as exposure to light, heat, cold, scratching, etc...

May be if you try to put on some gloves and see whether this makes a difference in your symptoms.

If the sun proves to be the culprit, i think you will have to find a sun block to which you are not allergic to.

Dear Doctor,
Finally, after staying out of the sun for two weeks, the rash, and blisters and itching are gone. I go back to the derm on Thursday, but today, I am going out in the sun at lunch, JUST to prove whether or not, this is a sun allergy.
I'll be in touch!
Thanks

I have the same condition as dicussed in this thread. Every year for the last several years during warm weather on the tops of my fingers just above my nails- usually only on the index finger. I get a nasty red bumpy rash it itches, burns, and then oozes- until the weather turns cold again. on occasion it will travel to my wrist and neighboring fingers. it is like my skin is gone where it is infected like little tiny holes have formed in my skin. The skin just sort of vanishes. Nothing helps I try everyhting to stop the itching, creams, lotions, nothing works, it itches to the point where I have to put band aids on my fingers to stop my self from scratching. I have band aids on almost everyday during warm weather. I get temporary releif from running my fingers under freezing cold water numbing them, but it always comes back. I am little worrried after reading the thread, my sister had lupus. I am not sick in any way at all- this is my biggest health problem. I just need to stop the itching. any suggestions welcome. this seems to get worse with each passing year.
