As a rule, do women have more or less seizures during pregnancy? If so, is it because the hormones during pregnancy are different? Thanks.

Hi SusieQ1,
Pregnancy hormones can have a significant effect on seizures. Generally, if the woman does not have a seizure disorder it quite unlikely to develop seizures during pregnancy (though it does occasionally happen).
For women who already have a seizure disorder, pregnancy can have varied effects. Some women will have less seizures and some will have more. The hormones can also affect the way that antiseizure medications work in the body.
Seizure medications themselves can be a bit dangerous for the baby also.
If a woman has not had seizure before and begins to have seizures, a condition called eclampsia must be evaluated for immediately as this is a life-threatening emergency that is associated with seizures, high blood pressure, vision changes in some women, protein in the urine and rapidly increasing swelling of the ankles/dependent areas of the body.
I hope this helps. If I haven't really addressed what you were wondering about please feel free to post a follow-up.
Best wishes.
