Question: dizzines, some fainting, eye muscle spasms

 mhawks - Sat Oct 24, 2009 1:32 pm

These are the symptoms: dizziness that has included "white outs", eye and arm muscle spasms and impairment of higher brain functions. CAT scan of brain, echocardiogram, MRI of body (looking for tumors), normal blood work, lumbar puncture, check by ENT all negative. I need a diagnosis as this is keeping me from working and driving and disability insurance won't pay because there is no diagnosis.
Thanks for any and all help.

Hello, mhawks -

What an unpleasant situation for you! Two things come to mind: paroxysmal postural vertigo and commonly called "ocular migraines." Dizziness occurs with both, but the white out, arm and eye spasms, and partial or complete loss of consciousness would more likely be related to the ophthamalogical migraine type of condition. It is a neurological condition. It's not a seizure disorder, despite the spasms. Many people have auras before their consciousness is impaired. It would help for you to keep a log of when these things occur, what you were doing at the time (including trying to focus your eyes), and how the symptoms progress. It may be difficult for you to recall exactly what happens, so ask those around you for assistance. Look on the internet for information about ocular migraines, and see if it describes what is occuring with you. Obviously, the diagnosis cannot be made by someone who is not able to examine you, so return to your neurologist for discussion and possible diagnosis. The condition can be quite impairing.

Good luck to you.
