Question: Violent sharp head shooting pains - not headache or migraine

I was looking for a Neurology section here but can't find one, so hope someone sees my question here...

I have suffered migraines and daily headaches for years (15+) but my chiropractor solved that about 1.5 yrs ago.

The past 2 days i have had horrific stabbing pains in my left temple which shoot about 2-3 inches in a direct line to the top of my eyebrow. It literally feels like I've been stabbed with a knife.

It's NOT constant (probably hourly if I had to average it) and I don't have any other pain with it, head or otherwise, no visual disturbances etc. I'm not taking any new meds at this time, don't have sinus etc. It's not like any pain I've had before.

This pain WAKES ME UP in the night it hurts so much.

Suggestions as to cause and treatment welcome.

Just don't tell me to take ibuprofen, acetaminophen, sudafed or any of the regular stuff - been there !

Thanks alot

Sounds like the sinus headaches I get. I get a lot of them around change of season - pollens, perfumes, second hand smoke can make them worse. Try finding herbal remedies for sinus.

I've been having the same exact pains. I looked it up on the internet, and it said something about "ice pick headaches". It is a sharp shooting pain that lasts between 5 and 30 seconds. If you're interested, I just typed in "sharp head pains" in Google, and a lot of different things came up. Hope you find out what it is, because I would like to know myself if it may be more.
Good Luck,
ME

Hi: Your description of the quality and location of the pain suggests that it is something called trigeminal neuralgia. The trigeminal nerve is primarily responsible for facial sensation. It has three branches (trigeminus is latin for "triplets") that radiate across your face. It is not uncommon for the middle branch (maxillary branch) to be compressed (usually by a blood vessel) causing the exact pain that you describe: Sharp, shooting, lightning-like pain that lasts several seconds. In medical terms, this is called "lancinating" pain, and it is highly suggestive of nerve impingement. Pain is often triggered by lightly touching the affected area (in men, shaving will often be a trigger). Your family doc will be able to diagnose this condition. You may need an MRI/MRA to take a look at what is causing the nerve compression. There are special medications for neuropathic pain that should alleviate your symptoms. I hope this helps! -Reid

since yesterday i have been having VERY sharp pains in the area around the back of my ear. Mine have been coming very frequently, like 1-3 every minute, and they last about 1-2 seconds. The pains are so bad that my eyes flinch and tear up almost everytime. I also have a pain that seems to be coming from my hair....like when i run my fincers through it...i get the same pain, but only if i put my fingers on that exact part of my haid(hair). I went to the doctor today...he seemed to be a little stumpped, and said something about shingles, and told me if i get a rash to call. It hurts so bad its almost disabeling. Can someone PLEASE tell me more. Im very worried. i cant even sleep through the pain.

Regarding Ouch, did you resolve what the problem was? I'm currently experiencing what you have described...

Thanks,

Steve
