In a double-blind randomized trial, 1565
patients initiating their chemotherapy cycles, who were
expected to experience short-term neutropenia with risk of infection,
received oral levofloxacin 500 mg/d or placebo for 7 days during the
expected period of neutropenia. Patients continued to receive the
same trial medication for each subsequent chemotherapy cycle.
The overall incidence of fever (temperature > 38 degrees C attributed to
infection) was 6%, which represents a 58% reduction in the risk of fever in the first cycle of
chemotherapy and by 32% across all of the cycles. Prophylaxis also reduced the risk of hospitalization.
