The MA.17 trial which was published several years back demonstrated substantial
improvement in DFS by administering letrozole after 5 years of adjuvant
tamoxifen to postmenopausal women with early stage breast cancer.
An
increase in low-grade hot flashes, arthritis, arthralgias and myalgias
were identified in patients treated with letrozole. The objective of
this sub-study was to evaluate quality of life (QOL). Patients completed
the several questionnaires at baseline, six months and annually.
Letrozole (Femara) is known to increase the risk of the bone-thinning
disease, osteoporosis. This may be a problem for women who are
postmenopausal where osteoporosis is already a problem. The study found
that Letrozole did not
have a substantial adverse impact on QOL.
