Two landmark studies reported a suvival benefit for
those with early resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) receiving
adjuvant chemotherapy compared to those put on follow up after surgery.
Both studies included patients with stage IB and II NSCLC.
In the Canadian study, patients receinving adjuvant
vinerolbine - cisplatin had a 69% 5 year survival rate, while those who
didn't had a 59% 5 year survival rate.
Similarly, the CALGB reported a
50% decrease in the risk
of death from lung cancer at 4 years for those treated with paclitaxel -
carboplatin compared to those treated with surgery alone.
