I have been taking nexium for a "supposed" ulcer for over a year now. i went to dinner last night with friends and had 3 slices of pizza and 3 beers. then i woke up in the middle of the night with severe diarrhea and blood in my stool. i have never had blood in my stool. i thought maybe possibly there may have been broken glass possibly in the beer mugs/bottles. i know i should see a doctor but i have no health insurance. can you help?

Dear Feather,
This sounds more to me like an infectious type of diarrhea meaning that you had food poisoning from the food that you ate. The infectious agent is usually a virus. These infections are usually self limited and should not cause any harm unless the diarrhea is so severe to the extent of causing dehydration.
Blood in the stools is an alarming symptom. My advice is that to see a doctor if the blood in the stools does not go away after the diarrhea is gone. Blood in the stools with diarrhea usually means that the inside of the colon is inflammed from the infection.
Thank you very much for using our website http://doctorslounge.com and i hope that this information helped.
