I am a 43-year-old female in basically good health. I don't drink or smoke, and I have no history of colorectal cancer in my family. Last year, around this same time of year, I had an episode of rectal bleeding that lasted several weeks. I had a colonoscopy last March, which came back negative. I have been free of rectal bleeding with bowel movements until this past week. Now, I have bright red blood with every bowel movement (my BMs are normal), sometimes it's just a lot on the toilet paper, sometimes it's in the bowl, too. I do have a small external hemorrhoid, but I cannot believe anything that small is causing this much bleeding. Should I not worry b/c my last colonoscopy was normal, less than a year ago? Or should I go back to see my gastroenterologist? Please advise me. Thank you.

Hello, I suspect it is the internal hemorrhoid. Perhaps you have developed more of these as well. Do you have a tendency to be constipated? If so, adding fiber and using a mild laxative such as Miralax could help a lot. If the bleeding continues it would be wise to consult with your gastroenterologist, proctologist, or other doctor just to be on the safe side. The fact you are current on your colonoscopy and it was normal is encouraging. Also, red blood with bowel movements does suggest low abrasions as opposed to internal bleeding.
Best wishes.
