Question: Abdominal pain/rt ovarian cyst/mass

User avatar I have abdominal discomfort/pain. The discomfort, ruq has been off and on for at least the past year. More recently however it has become daily, not related to eating. At times at least 3-4 times a week it has become almost intolerable. I also have daily belching episodes, which are uncontrollable and seems to worsen with stress, along with frequent nausea. I have some moderate lower abdominal bloating, mild discomfort, discomfort sometimes with intercourse. I have what feels like palpable ?masses/lymph nodes? (approx 1 1/2 - 2inches in size) on the rt and left sides of my lower abd. I have what appears to be ridges in the groin area, firm with what also feels like small lymph nodes down the upper part of my legs. I have had no real weight loss.I had my recent appt with my PCP. Upon her examination she palpated a cyst/mass on my rt ovary approx 2cm or so, which was exceptionally painful with palpation, along with some enlarged lymph nodes. When she proceeded with the internal exam and palpated the same area I have to say it was terrible again. She began asking about indigestion, bloating, constipation, and pain with intercourse etc. She seemed to be more focused on this rather than on the ruq pain. I have an ultrasound scheduled in a couple of weeks. My question is should I be concerned about ovarian cancer with all the above symptoms? Or is this an over-reaction on my part? Thank you.

User avatar Hello:

As a fellow nurse you probably realize that 95% of all tumors are benign. Therefore it is much too early to be contemplating the possibility of cancer. Wait to see what the scan shows and please ask your doctor any questions that come to mind. There are no silly questions when it comes to ones health.
Regards,
Carolyn

User avatar Rntdj,
As Carolyn said most of the cysts presenting in premenstrual women are of benign nature. I understand your concern about ovarian cancer, especially you say you have palpable lymph nodes. We should not rush to any conclusions however. The ultrasound should clarify everything. Has it been done yet?

Have a look at our ovarian cysts page for more info on the topic.

User avatar Thank you both for your reply. I think the main concern of my PCP and myself was that since there were histories of other types of cancer in my family and the given symptoms that it was suspicious even though in most cases masses are benign in nature. The ultrasound has been done, abdominal, pelvic, and transvaginal. No gallstones or inflammation of the common bile duct (pain attributed in that area (RUQ) to gastritis) transvaginal ultrasound showed a ruputed cyst with fluid in the cul-de-sac without debris, which is what apparently caused the severe lower abdominal pain. A few small cysts remain without any dominant follicle so it seems that all is well, for now at least, and the lower abdominal pain will eventually subside. The lymph nodes even though they are palpable are small so probably of little concern. Actually a significant improvement of the previous symptoms have already occured. At this point we are going to watch and wait unless symptoms arise again, and since cysts are common in premenopausal women, I'm praying for menopause :D
Thanks again,
Theresa
