Question: help with compound fracture

hey,
just wondering if anyone can help me out..I had a motorcycle accident on Oct 20, 2005 and had a compound fracture about 3 inches below my knee. I had an IM rod placed in my tibia...now heres my problem, I'm having excruciating knee pain...pain like I never had before, like enough to make me scream and not able to move my leg and that never happens. I even had some new painkillers prescribed and those don't even do anything..I had knee pain all through the healing months, but never as bad as it is now. Is this normal? Also, my doctor says I had a delayed nonunion, that was back in January...and he also told me that my knee pain could be from my top screw that had apparently moved a bit, like it got loosend up. He said this was fine and just to leave it...I had an xray done last week and the on duty doctor there said it was still nonunion. I've even been using this ultrasound machine since january...but I guess its not helping and it seems the screw has moved a little more. Does anyone know how long you need to wait until the doctors asses whether or not a bone graft may be needed or what can be done to help the knee pain? So far its been around 18 weeks and the bone still hasnt healed.

Hi andy,
I will include a link below from the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health. Even though the dicussion in this article is in regards to a different area of delayed union and nonunion, it may give you a general idea of the approximate wait time to expect intervention. Of the literature I have reviewed, generally speaking of course, the time span from initial intervention to bone graft is several months. I will again stress to you as I did in your other post that the symptoms you are experiencing are abnormal and I would strongly encourage you to discuss your current situation with your orthopedic surgeon for planned intervention.
