Question: Neck Pain

bridg12 - Wed Jun 07, 2006 3:35 pm

I am a 51 year old female of average weight and height. For about the past month, I have had a soreness at the base of my neck just a little to the left of what I think is the top of my spinal bone. I have no history of Arthritis, back or neck problems, and no recent injuries. It seemed to start as maybe a slight burning sensation, and now is just a nonspecific soreness. Interestingly, when I lay down, it goes away. Otherwise, it's there almost constantly. I'm not even sure if I would call it a neck problem or back problem. Any information at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Dear bridg12,

This sounds like muscle pain and spasm as it is related to certain posture.
Muscle spasm is a body reaction to injury in tissues

Causes of muscle injury include:
Muscle fatigue, wrong posture
Heavy exercise
Flu
Trauma
Metabolic abnormalities like low Magnesium level and Hypocalcemia
Hypoparathyroidism

The correct diagnosis is easier when other symptoms exist.

Self care and avoiding the precipitating cause will lead to a gradual but clear improvement in the pain. Home treatment includes the use of Analgesics, cold or hot therapy. Proper posture is important.

If the condition is progressing or other symptoms like numbness of upper limb exists, more investigations should be done to exclude cervical problems.

Follow up with your doctor is essential.
Hope you find this information useful.
