Question: My finger swelled and turned blue

MrElway - Sat Dec 16, 2006 12:45 am

"Hello, I am a 36 year old Male. I have been taking advil for Back pain for a month or so(the back is getting better now thanks to Chiropracter).

This morning (about 5 hrs ago) I opened my car door handle and shortly after one of my fingers(between middle and pinky on my right hand) turned slightly blue on the underside of my 2 knuckles(only on 1 finger). It swelled up a bit and is still kind of stiff. The blue seems to be going away somewhat(but it isn't gone). What advice can you give me please? Does this sound like a blood vessel? My finger is NOT numb or tingly and the top of the finger looks to be the same color as the rest.
Thanks,
Mike"

Hello,

This is what we call bruises, or ecchymoses that occur due to the leakage of blood from an injured blood vessel into the tissues which may become swollen.

Healthy people might develop bruises due to any injury that without causing skin break. Vigorous exercise may cause bruises.

Bleeding tendency is commonly seen in individuals taking NSAID drugs. Advil is one of these drugs that increase bleeding tendency and make bleeding easier.

Usually, It doe not need treatment after one to two days, the color will change gradually till fades at about day six.

Local measure include the use of ice packs during the first 24,
after that, heat, or warm packs to increase the circulation and fasten the healing of the injured tissues.

Best regards.
