Question: CMC joint pain

sarkin - Mon Jan 01, 2007 7:12 pm

I am an O. T. I use my hands a lot. I began developing cmc joint pain w/ swelling while working as a hand therapist. I was doing a lot of soft tissue massage primarily w/ my thumbs. That was 3 years ago. I do not have history of Arthritis

The pain resolved after a job change and has come back. I do not have crepitus, tested by my primary doc. She chalked it up as DeQuervain's. Only mild pain, equal bilaterally, with Finkelstein's. My cmc seems lax with occassional popping or displacement of the joint. I get a lot of pain while using my hand in pronation and cmc flexion. My thenar eminence is swollen, cmc itself is large/hard, and at rest my thumb sits anterior to my hand where my left thumb sits in alignment with the second digit.

Thanks for your help!

Went to the doc. today. I do have just the beginning stages of Arthritis in my cmc. I was really hoping that was not the cause!
Ice and thumb spica to use during sleep and heavy tasks.
