Question: bad sprained ankle 6 months ago-swollen, broken?

ronirains - Fri Feb 02, 2007 1:25 pm

I twisted my ankle about 6 months ago. I was terrible painful and sweeled up immediately. It started to bruise, but when I put it up and put ice on it, it went away. I went to the hospital and they did and xray and said it wasn't broken. They just wrapped it and told me to stay off it for 6 weeks.

Well, I twisted it 2 more times in the following month, and my doctor wouldn't have it xrayed again. It has been over 6 months now and it stays swollen on both sides of my ankle. I get sharp pains in it occaisonally. I still think it is broken. Any ideas?

ronirains-
I would definitely recommend a follow up Xray and MRI.
It is possible that you did not break a bone but you may have severly sprained or torn one or more ligaments in the ankle.
Once the ligaments (which hold the foot and leg together) become torn or severly stretched it becomes more likely that you will have a repeat of the same injury. An MRI would be a good way to image the soft tisses (ligaments and tendons) around your ankle to see if they have been damaged. Some such injuries can be treated with formal physical therapy and /or supportive devices placed in the shoes. More serious injuried may be best managed with surgery to repair the torn structures. A podiatrist or orthopedic surgeon could help you diagnose and treat an ankle injury. Left untreated, such an injury could be come a chronic issue. Good luck, PAF
