Question: shoulder/collarbone pain, no explantaion

puppetgirl_blade - Fri Feb 09, 2007 4:02 am

Im a 20 yr old female, diagnosed with Arthritis at the age of 14. I have some pain in my joints and weakness in my joints, but all in all, it doesnt bother me all that much except for on occasions. I was writing because about a year ago, all of a sudden, I started having pains in my collarbones. I thought maybe it was Arthritis, but it got to a point where I couldnt lift a 10 pound box of Coke cans. The pain I am experiencing does not feel like my normal pain. This pain is sharp and almost feels as if I have broken my collarbones and they are grinding together. I can push on the bones and the muscles around them, and not really feel much pain, so I don't think they are broken, but the pain is so bad and I am so stiff sometimes that I cant even change/remove my shirt and have to have my boyfriend help me get dressed, because the pain is too much. It feels as though they are out of place and sometimes I wish for people to push down on them because they feel as though I am shrugging my shoulders. No doctor has given me an answer, mostly just that its Arthritis, or tendinitis, but I have had those problems for 6 yrs now, and this pain is not the same. Can someone please help me if you have any idea what is wrong?

Hello,

This could be due to a muscle spasm.
Muscle spasm alone can cause this pain which can be an unidentified cause but in many cases is the result of inappropriate posture for long time like traveling, driving and certain types of work. Arthritic changes in the shoulder region may result in muscle spasm as a protective mechanism to avoid joint movement.

In these cases, self care and avoiding the precipitating cause will lead to a gradual but clear improvement in the pain. Home treatment includes the use of Analgesics, cold or hot therapy.
Rest for maximum two days is also beneficial.

Plain X ray or MRI on the shoulder may be requested to exclude other causes which result from bone and joint changes.

Direct clinical examination is essential.
Keep us updated.
Best regards.
