Question: Pain in back upon deep breaths

 luv4soy - Tue Mar 31, 2009 7:24 pm

I am a 52 yr old female, non-smoker. For the past month or so I have been getting pain in my back when taking deep breaths. I am not able to identify where the pain originates although when my husband is massaging my back the middle area is painful as is the lower area. I had a laminectomy in 1997 L4-L5 due to a fall from a 13' trailer. Back pain has never really went away but has not caused this type of pain before. Family physician ordered chest X-Ray and Thorasic X-Ray, both of which were fine. What could be causing this? Are there further tests that should be done? I greatly appreciate your help.

User avatar Hello,
Tenderness in the thoracic area with history of lumbar laminectomy which did not result in complete pain resolution is probably the result of muscle spasms or guarding. This can occurred up the spine from site of injury or surgery...very common.
Check with family physician about muscle relaxers. Also do moist heat packs. If no better in 1-2 weeks consider physical therapy.
Hope this helps give you some direction.
