Hi, My 6 week old baby (born premature 5 weeks early) has a cold. Her nose is blocked so she has trouble breathing through it and keeps waking, she is exclusively breast fed and gets frustrated while feeding as she cant breath. Her temp is normal (36.8) she has wet nappies, no rash so all else is fine. Can you advise what i should use to help clear her nose is there an oil i can use in the room?
Thanks

Hello, The best thing for newborns with stuffy nasal passages is some humidity in the room and saline nose drops. Use these carefully and then follow with a bulb syringe to remove mucus. Sometimes it's just swelling of the tiny little nose and not really a cold. But it is hard for the baby to breathe at times as you say. The normal temperature and hydration is encouraging. I am not aware of an oil but a humidifier is good to have in the room.
If she develops fever, breathing problems, or does not eat call the pediatrician. Giving her breast milk is the best thing you can do since this provides antibodies against germs in the environment.
Best wishes.
