Mechanism of action of Zoloft
Acts as an antidepressant by inhibiting CNS neuronal uptake of serotonin;
which raises serotonin levels in the CNS with little effect on norepinephrine,
muscarinic, histaminergic, and alpha1-adrenergic or dopaminergic receptors.
Indications of Zoloft
Treatment of
depression
Unlabeled use: treatment of
obsessive-compulsive
disorders
Contraindications of Zoloft
Should not be taken concurrently with
MAO inhibitors.
MAO inhibitors can
only be initiated 7 days after discontinuation of serotonin reuptake
inhibitors.
Contraindicated in the presence of hypersensitivity to Zoloft; pregnancy.
Use caution in the presence of impaired hepatic or renal function, lactation.
