Question: Severe swelling in both ankles, very little pain

 LeTigre2010 - Sun Aug 09, 2009 2:01 pm

Im a 26 year old female. I have major sprains in both anlkles over the years from playing sports. However, just recently, both of my ankles have been severly swollen. The strange part is the pain isnt that bad. Its uncomfortable, but not excruciating like Ive experienced in the past with ankle injuries. I have not injured my ankles recently. Im worried there might be a bigger issue because this just started in the past week and they are VERY swollen. Even the top of my foot is swollen all the way to my toes. What is causing this? Should I see a doctor?

User avatar Hello,
Yes, I think it would wise to see a physician who can evaluate the feet.

Bilateral foot swelling in your case could be from aggravation of an old ankle sprain injury but would also warrant investigation for other problems since there was no incident and both feet are affected at the same time.

Some potential causes of bilateral feet swelling without pain are poor venous circulation in the legs, congestive heart failure, and kidney or liver problems.

Therefore, some basic testing usually blood work (CBC, comprehensive metabolic panel), urine analysis, and perhaps x ray are starting points.

Take care.
