Definition
Dermatome is Greek word which literally means "skin cutting".
A dermatome is an area of the skin supplied by nerve fibers originating
from a single dorsal nerve root.
A knowledge of the dermatome map is essential in order to recognize
nerve root damage or radiculopathy. Radiculopathy is suspected when there
is loss of sensation in a dermatome. The following are key dermatomes
and should be learnt:
C6 at the thumb.
T4 at the nipple.
T10 at the umbilicus.
L5 at the top of the foot.
S1 at the bottom of the foot.
S2-S4 at the perineum.
