Fecal incontinence

Fecal incontinence is the loss of voluntary control of defecation.

The list of causes of fecal incontinence may be divided as follows.

Injury to the nerve supply of the rectum

Evaluate perianal sensation

  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Surgical injury
  • Accidents
  • Diabetes

Fecal impaction

Rule out fecal impaction by PR examination

  • Fecal impaction may be associated with fecal incontinence especially in the elderly.

Other causes

  • Severe dementia
  • Fecal impaction
  • Extensive inflammatory processes
  • Tumors
  • Obstetric injuries; and from operations involving division or dilation of the anal sphincters.
