Question: what is a healthy HRM when excercising?

Sometimes when I am exercising I get up to 140 heart rate per minute. Is that overduing it? Is there a top level that one should go before its too much?

Hi -- The maxiumum desireable heart rate during exercise can depend upon a lot of things, but the rule of thumb (which is overly simplistic) is to take the number 220, subtract one's age, which yields one's theoretic "maximum" rate, and then shoot for 75-90 per cent of that number. In your case,then, the rule-of-thumb "maximum would be 157, and 90% of that would be 141 beats per minute, the upper end of your ideal training range. The goal is to stay within this range, but there is never anything that tells us how much effort you're using before you reach that level. Ideally, without symptoms, this is the top end of your goal, and the question is: Do you reach this goal with minimal or moderate exercise or do you hit this at close to peak effort? The dilemma is that if this occurs at low levels, once you are feeling quite fit, do you push beyond the theoretical limits? In fact, some people are able to do this and others are not, but it's generally not a good idea to ever push yourself beyond your maximum rate, and ideally you should be peaking at the rate you have achieved, so it sounds as though you are doing your workouts to absolute best effect. Congratulations!
So long as there are no symptoms (shortness of breath, chest pain, etc.) at ths level, you should be able to continue to perform at this level. Good job!
