Antihistamines

Mechanism of action of Atarax

Competitively blocks the effects of histamine at peripheral H1 receptor sites; has skeletal muscle relaxing, bronchodilator, antiemetic and analgesic properties.

Indications of Atarax

  1. Treatment of anxiety, preoperative sedative, antipruritic

Contraindications of Atarax

  1. Allergy to any antihistamines

Adverse effects of Atarax

  • CNS: Headache, nervousness, dizziness, tremor, seizure
  • GI: Xerostomia
  • Respiratory: Thickening of bronchial secretions
  • General: Weight gain
  • Other: blurred vision
