Drug classes of Azelastine
Mechanism of action of Azelastine
Competitively blocks the effects of histamine at peripheral H1 receptor sites; has sedative effects.
Indications of Azelastine
- Nasal spray: Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis; sneezing, nasal pruritus, vasomotor rhinitis.
- Ophthalmic: allergic conjunctivitis.
Contraindications of Azelastine
- Allergy to any antihistamines
- Narrow angle glaucoma
- Bladder neck obstruction
- Symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy
- Asthmatic attack
- Stenosing peptic ulcer
- Pyloroduodenal obstruction
- Not to be used in neonates (possible association with SIDS)
Adverse effects of Azelastine
- CNS: Sedation, sleepiness, headache, nervousness, dizziness, euphoria
- GI: Appetite increase, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain
- Respiratory: Thickening of bronchial secretions
- General: Weight gain
- Other: Photosensitivity, rash, urticaria, angioedema, urine retention
