Drug classes of Chlor-Trimenton

Antihistamines (sedating type)

Mechanism of action of Chlor-Trimenton

Competitively blocks the effects of histamine at peripheral H1 receptor sites; has sedative effects.

Indications of Chlor-Trimenton

  1. Relief of symptoms associated with perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis; vasomotor rhinitis; allergic conjunctivitis; mild, uncomplicated urticaria and angioedema

Contraindications of Chlor-Trimenton

  1. Allergy to any antihistamines
  2. Narrow angle glaucoma
  3. Bladder neck obstruction
  4. Symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy
  5. Asthmatic attack
  6. Stenosing peptic ulcer
  7. Pyloroduodenal obstruction
  8. Not to be used in neonates (possible association with SIDS)

Adverse effects of Chlor-Trimenton

  • CNS: Sedation, sleepiness, headache, nervousness, dizziness, euphoria
  • GI: Appetite increase, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain
  • Respiratory: Thickening of bronchial secretions
  • General: Weight gain
  • Other: Photosensitivity, rash, urticaria, angioedema, urine retention
