Drug classes of Meclizine
Antihistamines (sedating type)
Mechanism of action of Meclizine
Has central anticholinergic action by blocking the chemoreceptor trigger zone. It also decreases excitability of the middle ear labyrinth and blocks conduction in the middle ear vestibular-cerebellar pathways.
Indications of Meclizine
- Prevention and treatment of symptoms of motion sickness; management of vertigo and diseases affecting the vestibular system
Contraindications of Meclizine
- Allergy to any antihistamines
Adverse effects of Meclizine
- CNS: Sedation, sleepiness
- GI: Appetite increase, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dry mouth
- CV: Palpitation, tachycardia, hypotension
- Respiratory: Thickening of bronchial secretions
- General: Weight gain
- Other: Hepatitis, photosensitivity, rash, urticaria, angioedema
