Question: post ovulation fertility
|optimistic - Thu Aug 05, 2010 10:58 am||
hi doctor. please I want to know why a woman is considered not in a safe period 7 days after ovulation since the egg expires about 24hrs after ovulation.

The ovulation time is not always known and since there is a period of around two weeks when fertility is likely, the recommendation is to be aware of that period of time and avoid having unprotected sex then if you want to avoid pregnancy. If you determine definite ovulation you can be more precise on the "safe" and "unsafe" days. In that case the 24 hour period would be meaningful. This would be using a fertility monitor kit, basal body temperature, etc.
