Question: birth control (kariva) and synthroid

 dash26 - Tue Dec 30, 2008 2:24 am

I am currently on synthroid .137 once a day after having my thyroid removed 6 years a go. I also have a very minor mitral valve prolapse. i want to start kariva at the beginning of my next cylce. I received this birth control from a clinic not my normal physician and I want to know if it is safe with my medical history.
thank you

User avatar Hello,
I do not know of any contraindications based on thyroid problems. Heart disease is always listed on the caution list for most drugs. You would need to ask your cardiologist if there are any concerns but I doubt it since these are hormones very similar to what your body makes naturally. It's just a matter of manipulating them to prevent ovulation and pregnancy.

Best wishes.
