Question: Effects of methroxate on pregnancy

 makayla22 - Sun Jan 18, 2009 7:51 pm

I take 20 mg a month of methroxate for arthritis. At about 6 weeks of my pregnancy I took a dose. I am now about 10 weeks, and am scared to death about the effects of this med on my baby. Can anyone give me some advice????

User avatar Hello Makayla22,

In general, the recommendation is to avoid pregnancy (for both men and women) for 3 months after the last dose of methotrexate. Be sure to let your obstetrician know that you were taking methotrexate so your doctor can appropriately look for any issues that may have developed.

Before worrying too much about this though, know that the resulting problems are not a 100% guarantee. There is still a very good chance that everything will be fine. Your obstetrician can give you more specific information about your case. And, as I'm sure you know, I would strongly recommend against taking anymore methotrexate during your pregnancy.

Best wishes.
