Question: Anemia

 leowhk - Tue May 03, 2005 6:50 pm

My mum has a very low Hb, about 6.5. But she is feeling OK and the doctor cannot identify any problem after checking her colon and bone marrow.

Why is her Hb so low and she is still feeling fine?

Regards,
Ian leow

User avatar Hi leowhk,
A hgb of 6.5 is very low and I certain hope that she was given a transfusion (at least for starters). If a colonoscopy was normal then that rules out a gastrointestinal anomolies or bleed, and a bone marrow study, if it was normal should have ruled out a disorder such as cancer. Numerous disorders may cause anemia. Have they ruled out liver disease, kidney disease, hypothyroidism, etc. as well? What about iron deficiency as your body requires iron to produce red blood cells.
Sincerely,
Rntdj
