Question: IRREGULAR PERIODS

 KAI - Mon May 09, 2005 11:47 am

I AM 24 YEARS OLD. I HAVE NOT HAD A PAP SINCE MY 3 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WAS A BABY. I AM ONLY HAVING A PERIOD EVERY 4 TO 6 MONTHS. MY MOM HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS AS I DO. SHE ENDED UP HAVING A FULL HYSTERECTOMY, BECAUSE SHE HAD OVARIAN CANCER AT 31. I WENT TO MY FAMILY DOCTOR SHE SAID THAT THEY CAN NOT DO ANYTHING FOR ME UNLESS I GO MORE THAN 6 MONTHS WITHOUT MY PERIOD. SHOULD I WORRY ABOUT CANCER?

User avatar Hi KAI,
The first thing I would suggest is a Pap smear. If this still has not been done I would suggest it be. Evaluative studies absolutely should be completed to identify any anomalies which would include a physical exam and an ultrasound. Many things may cause the absence of menstrual cycles for example, PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). Regardless of the cause and taking into consideration your age and family history I would not just accept, a statement such as "we can not do anything for you unless you go 6 months without a cycle" A statement such as this without any diagnostic studies, physical exam, nor a referral to a Gynecologist, in my opinion is unacceptable. Call the office and ask for a referral.
Sincerely,
Rntdj
