Question: HPV and IUD

 smtp222 - Wed Jul 20, 2005 2:27 am

I had a copper IUD for about four years. I recently had it removed. Shortly after it was removed I had an abnormal pap and was told that I had HPV. Since I contracted this while I had my IUD could it have affected my fertility?

Infertility is not associated with HPV. Infection with the Human Papilloma Virus is the leading cause of cervical dysplasia. The presence of one STD - in this case genital HPV - raises the possibility of other sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia which can cause tubal blockage and affect your fertility. Therefore, you and your sexual partner/s should have a full STD screen.
