Question: Could this be Lyme Disease or Co-infected tick borne illness

 npilant - Tue Nov 20, 2007 3:29 pm

Additional Note: I am 28 yr old male, from maryland and moved to florida September 2006. My short and long term memory is getting worse and worse day by day. I was ably to find a lot of information from some old medical records from the military. Origionally I thought everything started in 2001, but it was actually 2002. I remember most of the events occurring now, but cannot really put a time stamp on them. Also, at some point in time I had a weird looking ptch of skin on my right or left shoulder on the back. I noticed it by accident, as I don’t usually look at my back. I told the doc, but don’t remember him actually looking at it. It was probably about the size of my palm when I saw it , not a perfect circle or even a perfect oval, but that was the general shape. After a few weeks, it was gone and I can’t find mention of it in my medical records.

Event 1July – Sep 2002
Tingling/Numbess in upper back, heart burn, tingling feeling in head. Fall/Winter time frame went to Oklahoma had most intense Headache ever while on plane. Went to military clinic after arriving, no hospital that close, was diagnosed with sinusitis, no tests performed. All week had very bad Headache, caused Nausea, Fever. At some point felt a very sharp pain across center/left side of forehead. Shortly thereafter pain begins to subside. Additionally after getting home thick, mucousy, black blood in left nostril for a few days. At some point symptoms mysteriously go away.

Event 2 Mar - Sep 2003
Shortly before going overseas, Headaches return, midrin prescribed. Then, at RAF Mildenhall in England. Symptoms begin to return, tingling, numbness, leg pain, eye pain left eye(felt constricting and was directly behind left eye). Becomes difficult to walk. Back tingles/numbness when leaning forward. 90% pain in legs located in left leg. Pain travels feels like nerve pain, stings/tingles and moves between calf, thigh, foot. Had some temporary similar symptoms in left hand. Had Heartburn quite often. Went back to the states in April. Had MRI's done at Andrews AFB first, then Walter Reed Medical Center. No info received from Andrews physicians; Walter Reed doctor's could clearly see multiple cysts in left sinus which were confirmed by in house MRI's. Cysts had calcified, slightly larger one in left frontal sinus. Similar blood work done again, only findings which seem to be consistant slightly low potassium, slightly high rbc.

Event 3 Jul-Oct 2004
Again, similar symptoms return. All similar to before. Lasts a few months. Still had midrin, so took that for the Headaches. Went to ER for severe leg pain, dizziness. Had a lot of indigestion, some Chest pain. Told I had acid reflux. Same blood results, pretty normal, slight low potassium, slightly high rbc. Few months later symptoms dissapear. Able to return to physical life style, took up rock climbing and went to proffessional classes three times a week for a few months at a large facility in timonium, MD.

Event 4 Mar - Jul 2005
Again, symptoms return. Tingling, numbness, eye pain, occassional symptoms in left hand, weird head feelings heart burn, indigestion. Went to Laurel Regional Hospital a couple times without any significant findings. Went to old family physician. Blood work done. Don't rember if anything else was done. They looked at previous x-ray's, MRI's etc. Doc said pain was muskuloskelatal.

Event 6 Apr-Oct 2006
Symptoms once again return. See neurologist, MRI done of head and spine, contrast was not authorized. No lesions seen, nothing really scene in MRI's, nothing to suggest MS. Dr. mentioned that there is a rare form of MS or other demyelinating disease that only effects spine and is tested by obtaining CSF. After many tests(Blood work, x-rays, MRI's) decide to go see a chriropractor, no lumbar puncture was ever ordered. A few weeks into physical therapy symptoms seem to be going away , miraculously as always. Continue therapy to build up strength in back etc., as continued muscle weakness and lack of strength in legs has caused my leg muscles to shrink very noticably. A month or so into therapy, symptoms return with a vengeance. MRI's ordered, end up taking a different position in Florida and pre-authorization is not received. A month or so after moving, symptoms go away again.

Event 7 Dec 2006 -May-2007
A few weeks before the end of the year, symptoms return. Had to change insurance when moving to FL, and waiting for insurance to kick in. In March, see new doc in, Florida. Explain problems. Have an MRI with contrast done, some slight dessication seen in L4/L5 and schmorl's node at t12. Pinched nerve suspected. Go through a series of spinal injections to make pain go away. Doesn't seem to be working at first, maybe a month later, symptoms seem to go away. Note:after last set of injections, broke out in painful pimple like sores all over back. Seemed to go away after a few weeks.

Event 8 Jul - Present 2007
Very beginning of July 2007, experience very bad Abdominal pain. Went to ER multiple times the week of the 4th of July. Was told I had diverticulosis after CT of abdomen. During the last ER visit that week had been having a lot of blood in stool and had had Diarrhea all week. End of the week after continued light headedness and pain, am admitted to Holmes Regional Hospital. A week spent in hospital, many tests done. Additionally felt Chest pain while in hospital. Had been having leg, Back pain, no head tingling and just assumed it was my back and Abdominal pain was completely seperate. Diarrhea continues after leaving the hospital until the second week of September, then picks up again a week or so later continuing through present. Severe abdominal pains very often. Have been through more tests at Mayo, after first being seen. Initial testing (Fat test diet) caused a lot of pain, some type of fluid injected into vein during MRI led to intense Abdominal pain, lasting an hour or so. End of October, beginning of November, symptoms begin to change a little less constant left Abdominal pain, have not been eating red meat for a few months now (just hadn't wanted it). Leg pain more intense. Weird tingling returns in upper back when bending forward. Short buzzing Headaches lasting a few moments back to back, caused dizziness. Tingling returning in top of head. Stinging tingling pain returns to left eye, located primarily bottom left side and sometimes behind eye, sometimes constricting feeling. Last Monday/Tuesday woke up with skin flaking off on hands (palms, fingers and between fingers.) Additionally over last few months have noticed occassional slurred speech, where I think a thought and say a word that is a combination of two words. Specifically remember doing it during initial consultation with two docs at Mayo in Jacksonville. Only other info is a kidney cyst, and Hematocrit is 50. 5. But had it tested for JAK 2 mutation, and I have nothing to be concerned about. Blood is just a little thick and probably inherited.

Tests in July were Upper Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, MRI of head and spine, stress test, blood work. The equivalent of an EKG for your brain. No significant findings. Very small amount of pilori found. Antibiotics administered.

Tests from October- present at Mayo
Hydrogen breath test, blood tests, fat test, capsule Endoscopy. MRI. No real significant findings.

Currently diagnosed with diverticulosis (which wasn't seen during the colonoscopy), IBS, kidney cyst.

Could this be lyme disease or some other tick borne illness like pick’s disease or a co-infection with babeliosis?

User avatar Hi Npilant,

From your description it certainly sounds like you have a neurological issue going on. Some of the tick born diseases can cause neurological issues. Your symptoms do not strike me as classic for these diseases but in my area there are not a lot of tick illnesses so my experience with them is limited.

If there is concern it certainly sounds reasonable to test for them. Most of these are tested for by a blood test.

I would recommend you follow up with a neurologist for further evaluation.

Best wishes.
