Question: lumbar disc problem with L4-S1 and pain
|kel73 - Thu Nov 05, 2009 7:13 pm|
I have a few quick questions regarding my back problem. I am 36, in good health otherwise. I have had back pain since I was in my 20's, this was always put off as muscle pain. Recently I had an MRI and I am having trouble understanding the conclusions. L4-L5 is just disc degeneration and mild bulging. L5-S1 shows disc bulging, broad-based right posterior extruded nucleus pulposus encroaching upon the right lateral recess, of uncertain significance. There is bilateral outlet foraminal encroachment, right greater than left, and mild facet joint osteoarthritis.
My question is, the nucleus within the disk that is extruded, is this herination? or simply just extruded and has not leaked out of the disc?
Is foraminal encroachment serious? I do suffer from pain everyday. Some days are better than others. Sometimes if it gets aggrivated enough I can feel pain radiation in my right buttock, and my right leg feels "different", no pain to foot.
Just wondering if this is more serious than I thought, or common.
Thank You for your time.

Disc extrusion is less severe than herniation.
Foraminal encroachment means a nerve may be pinched (from disc or bony spurs) and can cause radiating pain, lower limb numbness / tingling or leg weakness.
If any of these symptoms occur then see a neurosurgeon for evaluation.
