Question: Post-op pain control for major abdo surgery

 babs99 - Fri Feb 03, 2006 2:28 pm

What is an acceptable dose of meperidine/pethidine to give an adult after major abdominal surgery. How frequently?
 jeanniern - Sat Mar 04, 2006 2:19 am

Hi Babs99. There are many factors to consider when administering narcotics for pain control. Pain tolerance, perception of pain, side effects, level of activity after surgery, history of pain control / management, etc. An acceptable dose and frequency of meperidine would be determined by your surgeon. Please let your nurse and./ or surgeon know if what is ordered is not effective.
