If you have a history of stones, fluids in general should be encouraged to in order to dilute your urine (8 glasses of water per day should do the job). This is because kidney stones may form when your urine becomes too concentrated.
Types of kidney stones include calcium stones (calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate and calcium oxalate), uric acid stones, cystine stones and struvite stones.
Depending on the type of stone, certain medications may be recommended to prevent recurrence such as medicines that alkalinize the urine (sodium bicarbonate or sodium citrate).
