Question: food odor in urine

 robhat3 - Mon Feb 08, 2010 1:10 pm

Recently, when I urinate, I can smell what I have eaten in my urine. This has never happened before. Is this a symptom of diabetes or kidney problems?

User avatar Hello,It is not uncommon to get the smell of certain foods in urine. For example asparagus can give out a smell so do cetain medications like ampicillin.
Diabetes or prediabetes has nothing to do as kidney disease relating to food induced urine smell. However urinary tract infections, prostate disorders, and diabetes can well make the urine smelly however not relate to the food taken.A urine routine test would be indicated just to be sure.Best wishes.
